Hippolytus: Was rule so sweet?  Never, I tell you, Theseus,
For the wise.  A man whom power has so enchanted
Must be demented.  I would wish to be
First in the contests of the Greeks,
But in the city I’d take second place,
And an enduring happy life among
The best society who are my friends.
So one has time to work, and danger’s absence
Has charms above the royal diadem.
